This role involves supporting our Short Film Manager by reviewing the suitability of submissions for consideration. You do not have to be based in the UK to apply, as all the viewing will be done remotely (access to a computer, and a stable internet connection is necessary). Main Duties and Responsibilities On average pre-selectors will view between 5-6 hours of content as we encourage voting from multiple selectors to ensure fairness. CFF receives around 300 submissions on average, but overall hours may increase if we go beyond this total - so some flexibility is encouraged. Viewing, and assisting with the submission process through our festival platform FilmFreeway.Our short film submissions will be from all types of genres but will be no more than 20 minutes in length. Meetings with key festival members, including members of the Awarding Jury (this will help you gain insight into the festival & filmmaking industry). Key Skills/ Traits An understanding of film festival standards and a critical eye. Of course enthusiasm is the most important! Organised and the able to work to deadlines Knowledge and Experience The successful candidate should be able to evidence the following essential criteria: An interested in films, filmmaking, programming, curation & exhibition. Internships General Internships We are seeking hard working and enthusiastic individuals who would like an internship with a film and media organisation. We are a media charity that holds an annual film festival, live events, yearly film screenings and programming, runs industry training, masterclasses and talks, education programmes and community media projects. We will give you an opportunity to work across all our organisational strands - festival, industry and events, community, education, and charity to gain valuable experience in varied roles within the creative industry. You may work as a production assistant on one of our live events or online masterclasses; a researcher or content creator for our social media; a designer of digital assets for one of our programmes or as an event planner for one of our live events. We are looking for adaptable and enthusiastic people who are ready for a challenge and want to try their hand at lots of different roles within the media. Internships typically last 3-6 months and involve a time commitment of 6 hours a week, including our weekly team meetings. While working with us you will gain access to our networks and we’ll share opportunities in our organisation and the wider media industry with you. We’ll help you with CV, job application and interview skills. You will be given an open reference and credit for your work, an opportunity to meet others, develop a network of people with a shared passion for film and to communicate your enthusiasm for film! This involves promotion on social media, screenings at Cornwall Film Festival and our yearly ANIMATE Cornwall festival across the county. Essentially a hilarious romp featuring a group of inquisitive, accident-prone amphibians, this 7-minute short avoids hopping down the path of saccharine sweet anthropomorphism (we see all too much in animation) by blending its delicious dark subplot into proceedings. It’s a move that really lifts this short above and beyond a lot of the other films we see in the genre. Though the clever, unfolding plot was my own personal highlight of Garden Party, it would seem neglectful to gloss over that glorious aesthetic without mentioning it in more detail. From that meticulous opening shot of the frog gliding through the debris-filled pool to that incredibly textured frog rising from the plate of oyster shells, it’s the attention to detail here that truly impresses. It’s not only the frogs that are the carefully considered characters in the design though, the location feels as much of a player in the storyline as any of our long-legged protagonists and if anything it’s the conscientious depictions of the backgrounds that add that extra level to both the aesthetic and that compelling subplot. Screened in the ‘Horror: Thrilling and Chilling’ programme at this year’s Encounters festival (where it was easily the stand-out film of the session), Garden Party has been impressing audiences and juries at festival worldwide throughout 2016 & 2017. Many festival submission platforms allow for online submission of an EPK. Some festivals will only ask for an EPK if your film is selected. Alternatively, much of the information in the list above can be uploaded via festival submission platforms. Film for submission – Some festivals require that all projects be submitted via a password-protected streaming URL link, e.g. Vimeo, YouTube. Others will accept a film uploaded through a submission platform or the festival’s website. Some festivals will accept a DVD and may specify the region and file format. DVDs must be labelled with title, production company name, phone number and address, director’s name, length in minutes, and submission platform tracking number if applicable. Submitted DVDs are unlikely to be returned. Film for screening if selected – Different festivals have different requirements. For example, this is for the Tribeca Film Festival: (i) one (1) exhibition copy (technical specifications must be confirmed by the Festival in advance) of the invited work; (ii) a backup copy or copies, as required by the technical department; and (iii) additional exhibition copies, if requested by the Festival (to allow for multiple screenings at more than one venue). It is recommended that you ship all exhibition copies via courier in order to permit the tracking of your project once it leaves your hands. Other festivals require a DCP of the film, with a DVD or Blu-ray as a backup. All links, DCPs and DVDs should be tested before sending them to a festival. Rights clearance – Most festivals’ rules and regulations have a clause like this: All rights, permissions and clearances must be obtained prior to submission and applicants must ensure that they have the right to submit the work with regard to third parties connected to the production of the film in question. By entering your work, you agree to this and the responsibilities involved. The festival assumes no liability for violation of copyright law. This applies to any music, video or film footage, copyrighted images or archive material used in the film. Proof of student status - if submitting to a festival’s student film category, you may be required to provide valid proof of your student status if selected (showing that you are currently a student or were during the making of the film). A FROG SITS IN WATER DYLAN FRIESE-GREENE A Frog Sits in Water is an experimental film exploring human complacency in the face of disaster. Set during an all-consuming heatwave, the film follows a lone figure spiralling into psychosis as the world boils and rots around him. Surrounded by spinning fans, he blocks out the sunlight and plays his saxophone in a desperate attempt to to drown out reality and retreat inward. Both timely and relatable, this film offers a sharp reflection on focus, presence, and the way technology shapes our minds—inviting audiences to pause, reflect, and reconsider what really holds their attention. GLIMPSE ULRIKE SWOBODA-OSTERMANN Deep in rural Cornwall, autistic Thomas loves to read. Retreating from a world he finds sensorily challenging, he spends all day buried in books, telling himself stories of heroes and epic quests. When a flying football starts a new friendship with sporty Agnes, Thomas initially finds it hard to relate and let her into his world. This distance between them means that Agnes becomes bored with Thomas’ storytelling, forcing Thomas to use his incredible creativity to make new stories for them both. Through their burgeoning relationship, he learns how to express himself creatively, empathise and learn from others, making his unique experience of the world around him more understandable and manageable. STRAIGHT AHEAD 01: RUNNING AWAY BECALELIS BRODSKIS Made across months of travel, this improvised drawn animation — filmed against train and bus windows — becomes a contemplative collage of continual journeys between Cornwall in the west, Suffolk in the east, and the places in between. Rooted in a purist manifesto of straight-ahead animation, it discards planning, storyboards, light boxes, and corrections to embrace the raw energy of the line.
